The graphs I created at the bottom of this piece plainly show the correlation between how much money legislators took from oil & gas interests and how they reacted to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. This was an innovation for MapLight in presenting information, and was reprinted in the Huffington Post and numerous other outlets.
This piece explains the origins of Mexico's drug cartels and how they interact with one another and the country at large. One minor caveat: My editor had me insert a call for cannabis legalization at the beginning and end of the article, and, while I agree with the policy, I would have rather this stand alone as an explainer piece. That said, I loved researching and explaining this topic that everyone has heard of but few understand.
